If you have loose or ill-fitting dentures, your ability to eat certain foods and speak may become affected. Due to advances in dentistry, there is now a procedure whereby your denture can be fixed to your jaw with dental implants. This treatment, known as implant overdentures or denture stabilisation, offers patients with dentures a more permanent solution that can significantly improve your quality of life. You will be able to enjoy your favourite foods again and feel comfortable smiling, safe in the knowledge that your dentures are staying put.
The implants are titanium screws surgically placed into the jaw, replacing original roots. Depending on the treatment, you may need between 4 and 8 implants to secure each denture in place. It’s a basic procedure that can be completed under local anaesthetic. The implants will need two to six months to heal and bond with your jawbone to provide a solid and stable support for your replacement tooth. Temporary replacement teeth are typically fitted at the same time as your implant placement procedure, which will stay in place until the final restoration appointment.
Once the implants have integrated with the bone and surrounding tissues for certain period, your dentures will be placed on top of the implants through a range of special fixtures.
The dentures can still be removed for cleaning but will stay put once in place.
